Merritt Guthrie’s refereeing journey began in 1993 when, after coaching his oldest son’s team and becoming frustrated with several of the referee’s decisions, he decided he could contribute more by stepping onto the field himself. What started as a desire to better understand the game soon became a lifelong passion and a lasting legacy.
Beginning with local youth matches, Merritt quickly advanced through the ranks, officiating regional, state, and eventually national-level competitions. Along the way, he was supported by an incredible community of fellow referees and mentors within the Florida soccer community who, without him realizing it at first, became a second family.
His dedication and skill led him to officiate some of the highest levels of competition, traveling throughout the United States and internationally while working matches featuring top players and clubs. Yet, despite his accomplishments on the field, Merritt found his greatest fulfillment in giving back to the game. Merritt was a National Referee from 2004 to 2006.
As his officiating career evolved, he became a mentor to countless new referees. No game was too far away, and no request for guidance was too small. Whether conducting assessments, offering encouragement, or sharing lessons learned from years of experience, Merritt invested himself wholeheartedly in developing the next generation of officials. He took immense pride in helping others grow, always hoping they would excel and surpass even his own achievements.
After earning his National Referee Emeritus status, Merritt continued to serve the game as a PRO Referee Coach and a US Soccer National Referee Coach, bringing the same passion, professionalism, and commitment that had defined his career for decades.
The news of Merritt’s untimely passing sent shockwaves throughout the refereeing community, touching every field, stadium, and training ground where he had left his mark. His loss was deeply felt by all who knew him.
Today, Merritt’s legacy lives on through the referees he mentored, the friendships he built, and the countless lives he influenced. His stories continue to be shared, his lessons continue to be taught, and his love for the game continues to inspire others.
Merritt was respected, admired, and deeply loved. His contributions to the game and the refereeing community will never be forgotten, and he will be dearly missed by all who have the privilege of knowing him.
