HALL OF FAME 2024

Greg Watson

Greg Watson began his soccer career as a collegiate player from 1980 to 1983 at the University of South Carolina Spartanburg (now the University of South Carolina Upstate), where he competed in the NAIA (the institution later transitioned to NCAA Division I status). During his playing tenure, he earned significant recognition, including three All-District First Team selections, All-Area First Team honors, and national recognition as both an NAIA and NSCAA All-American Honorable Mentions. His contributions to the program were later honored with induction into the university’s Athletics Hall of Fame in 2009.

Parallel to his playing career, Watson began officiating high school soccer in 1982, establishing an early foundation in refereeing while still a student-athlete. Over time, he advanced through the U.S. officiating pathway, becoming a National Referee candidate in 1995. In that capacity, he worked high-level youth competitions, including regional and national finals, as well as adult regional and national finals, and matches such as the prestigious McGuire Cup finals.

His professional refereeing career expanded into the U.S. professional soccer landscape, where he officiated in leagues such as the USISL and the A-League, working assignments at both regional and national levels. With the launch of Major League Soccer in 1996, Watson was appointed as an MLS assistant referee while continuing to serve in second-division professional leagues. He retired from National Referee status in 2004 at the age of 42.

Following his on-field officiating career, Watson transitioned into referee development and assessment roles. In 2006, he became a registered National Referee Assessor and later served as a referee inspector and coach for MLS matches and the Professional Referee Organization (PRO) development group from 2008 through 2018, contributing to the training and evaluation of top-tier officials in U.S. professional soccer.

Perhaps Greg Watson’s most enduring legacy is his commitment to referee development and mentorship throughout Florida’s soccer community. While he achieved success as a referee, assistant referee, assessor, and coach, Greg became especially known for the countless hours he dedicated to developing officials within the Florida youth, adult amateur, and professional soccer environments.

As both an active referee and, later, an assessor and mentor, Greg guided generations of officials not only through formal evaluations but also by working alongside them on the field. Many young referees had the opportunity to officiate matches with Greg, learning firsthand from his professionalism, knowledge of the game, and calm leadership. Even after his professional officiating career concluded, he remained a constant presence at local fields and amateur matches, willingly sharing advice, analyzing match situations, answering questions, and encouraging referees to continually improve.

Known for always making himself available, Greg took a personal interest in the development of countless officials across Florida. His influence extends far beyond the matches he officiated, living on through the many referees whose careers he helped shape through his mentorship, guidance, and unwavering commitment to the referee community.
